The WELCOM study: WEight Loss and Cancer Outcomes in the Mid-South

The WEight Loss and Cancer Outcomes in the Mid-South (WeLCOM) team is lead by composed of researchers Dr. Liza Makowski, PhD (UTHSC), Dr. Joe Pierre, PhD (Univ of Wisconsin-Madison), and Dr. Jeff Rathmell, PhD (Vanderbilt University Medical Center). Working with bariatric surgeon Dr. Matthew Davis, MD, co-founder of the UTMP Medical Group – Weight Management and Wellness Center. We are examining bariatric surgery to understand mechanisms that impact cancer risk and outcomes using translational approaches. Our work is funded by the National Cancer Institute with various grants indluding R01 CA253329 and U01 CA272541. We are part of a larger team funded through the NCI’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences as part of the Metabolic Dysregulation and Cancer Risk Program: A Transdisciplinary Approach to Obesity-Associated Cancer Research.
